SHORT CENTRAL AVENUE

At the heart of Summerville’s historic downtown is “Short Central” — a pedestrian outdoor shopping street with boutique stores and outdoor dining. This urban design project will bring new life and a sense of place to this important part of town, enhancing user experience and attracting visitors and shoppers.

 

Inspired by the Lowcountry’s traditional basket weaving history, the streetscape elements are designed to evoke the elegant structures of baskets and lattice work, with the main pergola and performance area resembling a life-sized open flower basket. Emphasizing the name of the town — Flowertown, trees and planters unify the pedestrian street and flower baskets are installed at window level to create a hanging garden experience. A system of overhead cables allows for seasonal display of lights, umbrella shades, and other festive elements to provide a fresh and inviting experience for visitors.
