PIED-A-TERRE
This 700-square foot apartment was transformed into an open loft-like pied-a-terre with areas for entertaining, dining, sleeping, and a study. The design was driven by the need for natural light and a fluid, adaptable floor plan. Doing away with compartmentalized walled off rooms, the apartment was re-envisioned as an open square-shaped vessel containing various activities demarcated by furniture and built-ins. The flexible space functions as a porous, open loft, bringing precious natural light deep inside, or it can be transformed into separate private areas by closing translucent pocket doors. Custom built-in cabinets absorb all the "messy" necessities, creating a calm, zen-like retreat in the center of a bustling city.
