DORCHESTER HERITAGE CENTER TRAILS

Set in a historic woodland landscape, the new Dorchester Heritage Center will offer visitors over 80 acres of nature programming, including trails, nature studies, living history reconstructions, and outdoor venues and exhibits. Epstein Architecture is designing the trail system and outdoor elements for this exciting and important project.

The trail head, designed as two curving and diverging canopies, leads visitors on their journey to two different trails. The "Trail That Heals" has calm and meditative spaces, and the "Edisto Trail" has artifacts and interactive exhibits describing the cultural and historical aspects of the Edisto Natchez Kusso Native American tribe. Unifying the experience, the same language of simple and natural materials carries through along the trails as trail markers, boardwalks, seating, exhibits, and event spaces.
